A typology project where, every Friday, I’d make a long black coffee and create a small hand-lettering piece. Some weeks it would be colourful and elaborate, while other times it was simple and quick, depending on the mood of that day. I’d then use the Boomerang app on my phone to create a looping animation, which I’d post to my Instagram feed. Hence the name “Boom Friday”.

These pieces are raw and rustic in form, not overworked, created in a short time frame with the aim of having an outlet of imperfect pieces, publishing without overthinking. The motion is often some subtle camera movement or an object being moved around the composition.

The typology evolved as I worked on the project over several years from 2016 through to 2022. The very first Boom Friday I created was posted on the 1st of July 2016 and the last one I published on the 15th of December 2022. Almost every Friday for over 5 years, a project that grew to over 200 pieces.

It’s fascinating to look back on this series, as little things changed more obviously while others shifted subtly. Like the location sometimes being completely different depending on where I was working at that time in my life. Every now and then, the mug would change as a new favourite emerged. Similarly different pans and tools might have been used and sometimes extra little props relevant on the day were included in the composition. Over time, a more cohesive style began to emerge in the hand lettering, revealing a sense of rhythm and continuity. You can almost see it unfold in phases, like seasons, as my style evolved throughout the project.
